We offer three sizes of shave ice: menehune, ikaika, and ali’i. Here’s why we chose the names of the sizes.
Menehune (men ee HUNE ee) are fictional characters in Hawaiian legends. They are small, kind of like elves and lepricons, which is why we’ve used the name “menehune” for our small shave ice. Some Hawaiian legends portray the menehune as good and in other legends the menehune are bad. A Google search for "menehune" has lots of interesting information on these little guys. The menehune size shave ice is about the size of a baseball on a cone.
Ikaika (ee KIE kah) means “warrior” in Hawaiian and we thought it would be a good name for our medium size shave ice. Though often peaceful, ancient Hawaiians revered the ikaika who protected them in times of war. The ikaika size shave ice should look like a softball on a cone.
Ali’i (ah LEE ee) means “royalty” in Hawaiian and is fitting for our biggest shave ice. In ancient Hawaii, the Ali’i were the ruling class of people. The Hawaiians believed their Ali’i were just lower than the gods. We try and make the ali’i size shave ice as big as we can.
All sizes come with the option of ice cream in the bottom and up to three flavors.
